Rotary’s Leicestershire Life Education Centres

The Rotary Club of Market Harborough has had a long involvement with Rotary’s Leicestershire Life Education Centres since former President Ian Parry’s participation at District level when they were first introduced in England in the 1990s.

What Are Life Education Centres?

The charity was set up in the 1990s by Rotary clubs.

Life Education Centres is an educational based charity providing a range of high quality services appropriate to the needs of

ALL PRIMARY AGED SCHOOLCHILDREN.

Life Education helps children to make informed and healthy choices.

This vital Rotary Charity provides invaluable support in the areas of personal, moral, social and health education.

Delivered to the School in a very special mobile classroom

Highly trained educators visit schools in specially designed mobile classrooms, which help to create a memorable experience by taking learning outside the normal classroom environment.

Issues covered include how the human body works, the importance of a healthy diet and exercise, the risks of tobacco, alcohol and non prescription drugs.  Also covered are emotional well being including peer pressure.  Cyber (internet) safety is now included.

Emphasis is placed on teaching in a fun and interactive manner, using music and light effects as well as interactive technology and puppets.  Children love and identify with Harold the giraffe our puppet mascot.  Specially designed programmes for each year group from nursery to year 6 complements the National Curriculum.

How School Visits Are Funded

The 2016 cost of a visit to a school is just £3.50 per pupil.  Life Education Centres can keep the charge at this level due to the work of volunteers in raising funds and by donations.  Without this support, the cost per pupil per visit would be £5.00.  Apart from Rotary, the Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity has been keen to support the work in its area as are Head Teachers, School Governors and Parent Teachers Associations.

Current Dilemma Presents A Challenge

The mobile classrooms are getting older and towing costs are rising.  Without more support, providing this amazing service will be problematic.

Life Education Centres has set itself a target for its 20/20 Campaign of raising £20,000 to celebrate its 20 year life and to fund upgrading the mobile classrooms. Up to June 2016 £11,466 had been raised.  This has been contributed by donations from 13 Rotary Clubs including Rotary Clubs of Market Harborough and Kibworth & Fleckney, 3 Inner Wheel Clubs, 13 Events, 5 individuals and 5 others.  Two Gift Aid claims have also helped. 47 transactions in all!

Connection Between Life Education Centres and Rotary

Life Education Centres is a separate Rotary charitable trust.  The voting delegates are the Rotary Clubs in Leicestershire and Rutland. Each Club has one vote.  As such, Clubs are encouraged to send a representative to the AGM.  New trustees and helpers are always welcome.

If you want to know more about the above, you can speak to Rotary Market Harborough club members Les Dodd or Brian Tanner, just  call or e-mail our club secretary (see home page) and one of us will call you.
