Report from AWARDS EVENING 2016
100% of the funds raised by swimmer sponsors was distributed! All event costs were met by our business and private event sponsors, to whom we are extremely grateful. Rotary Market Harborough members are all volunteers, neither the members or the organisation takes anything from the funds raised.
There were also prizes awarded to swimmers and individuals who had contributed to the success of the event. These were:
The Barbara and Tom Walker Award for outstanding achievement (2016)
This award, given in honour of former Rotarian the late Tom Walker, and his widow Barbara who is a regular, generous business sponsor of the SwiMarathon, is given to the person who has the most impact on the success of the SwiMarathon.
For 2016, the award was given to the team of Ladies of Great Bowden, represented by Jenny Parr and Sue Woollard. They have swum in every one of the six SwiMarathons held and have encouraged their grandchildren to swim with them, too. This year they also won the Prize For Raising The Most Amount Of Sponsorship Money: £395 (which could rise to nearly £500 with Gift Aid) by 5 swimmers in the team. They have been the team raising most money three times before. Their contribution to the success of the SwiMarathon as an event has been huge.
Most Teams Entered: Hazel Stephens, teacher at Market Harborough Church of England Primary School with a total of 9 teams of pupils parents and staff.
The team with the most imaginative name: Can't Rememberers (Little Bowden Primary School)
The team who swam the most lengths: The Hydromasters from Market Harborough Swimming Club who swam 179 lengths.
2016 Star Swimmer: Sarah Keete who swam for the St Di's Daring Dolphins
2016 Star Junior Swimmer Isabella Andrews who swam for the Starfish team of MH C of E School.

£7,240 given to local causes from Rotary SwiMarathon 2016 Funds
The Rotary Club of Market Harborough made awards of grants to 23 local organisations, totalling £7,240. The money was raised from the SwiMarathon event held in March at Harborough Leisure Centre. Swimmers were sponsored and many local businesses also sponsored the event. The awards were presented at a special Rotary meeting, to which the business sponsors were also invited.
Each grant recipient had the opportunity to talk for 2 minutes about their organisation and how the money in the grant would be spent. One of the benefits of the whole event was how much everybody there learned about other good causes in Market Harborough, as well as about Rotary and the SwiMarathon. It was wonderful to hear how many people volunteer in so many various and busy ways in and around Harborough.
This is the sixth year the Rotary Club of Market Harborough has been able to give away money to local worthy organisations.
The 2016 SwiMarathon involved 39 swimming teams from local businesses, schools and clubs, plus some Rotarians and their families and friends. Each team swam in one lane of the pool for one hour. The event spread over 2 days and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part! A total distance of about 100km was swum.
The grants were advertised on HFM and in the Harborough Mail and Leicester Mercury. Applications for amounts up to £500 were invited. The grants were decided by a panel of independent judges and ranged from £100 to £500.
